RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment)

The RoHS is a directive of the European Parliament and the European Union Council that aims to reduce the use of certain dangerous substances commonly used in electric and electronic equipment (EEE).   EU legislation restricts the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment and promotes the collection and recycling of such equipment in which consumers can return their used EEE waste free of charge.  The legislation also requires certain hazardous substances (heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium and flame retardants such as polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)) to be substituted by safer alternatives.

Prysmian Group/General Cable understands the importance of restricting the use of hazardous substances in our products and we take the necessary steps to comply with the evolving RoHS directives as they pertain to wire and cable products and materials.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals)

REACH is the regulation of the European Parliament and the European Union Council, adopted on December 18, 2006, which modernizes European legislation regarding chemical substances.  It sets up a unique integrated system of chemical substances in the European Union.  The REACH objective is to improve the protection of human health and the environment while maintaining the European chemical industry’s competitiveness and strengthening its spirit of innovation.  The REACH list (Candidate list) may be updated every six months.  A list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) is generated and evaluated by the European Chemicals Agency (“ECHA”)and the EU member-states on an ongoing basis.  Based on a review of the data gathered during this process, some of these substances may then be added to the Candidate list of materials for subsequent authorization for use.  If, following additional testing and evaluation, the substances are then placed on the Authorization list, they may only be imported into the EU with prior authorization from ECHA.

Prysmian Group/General Cable understands the importance of restricting the use of hazardous chemicals in our products and we take the necessary steps to comply with the evolving REACH requirements as they pertain to wire and cable products and materials.

California Proposition 65

California Proposition 65 is officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.  The proposition protects the state's drinking water sources from being contaminated with chemicals known to cause cancer, cause birth defects or cause other reproductive harm.  It requires businesses to inform consumers about exposures to such chemicals by way of warning labels. Proposition 65 requires California to provide a list of chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. This list, which is updated at least once a year, has grown to over 1000 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.  For more information, visit https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/

Prysmian Group/General Cable understands the importance of this regulation and we take the necessary steps to comply with the evolving Prop 65 regulation as it pertains to wire and cable products and materials. Prysmian Group/General Cable products that are affected by the regulation are labeled in accordance with California Proposition 65 requirements.
